Technology Trends in 2016 and the Internet of Things (IOT)

This video is interesting to me not because of what they are saying, because Dr. Kleinrock one of the four fathers of the Internet told me the exact same information 5 years ago. Clearly there are reasons why Dr. Kleinrock is so smart and seeing into the future is one of them.

Yahoo is Trying to Become the #1 Search Engine Again and Using its Own Technology

I think this is a big and interesting story about Yahoo.
I would try the same strategy if I was the CEO of Yahoo. Many years ago when Yahoo was #1 and Google was just starting I was promoting Google and thankfully I bought Google stock when it first went public.

Now it is funny that fourteen+ years later I am writing an article asking everyone to give the new Yahoo search engine a chance. I see that Yahoo is sending a lot of traffic to smaller blogs and businesses. As this blog which is read by Google employees is receiving more traffic from the new Yahoo search engine than Google sends me.

Something seems a bit odd to me about Yahoo's new search results, many searches seem close to being exactly the same as Google's results. Some searches do seem dramatically different. I am still testing, yet I do not understand why so many searches show almost the exact same results on both Google and Yahoo?

Why Google and Ford Working Together Makes Me Laugh

In the news there are rumors of Google working with Ford on a Self Driving Car.
Why does this make me laugh?

If you use Blogger you will know exactly why I laugh. Google cannot build reliable defect (bug) free software. It is one thing to have Blogger as a barely usable product, it is an entirely different situation to expect me to drive in any software Google builds for a car until after I see it working properly for two years out on the real roads of America. Perhaps the software engineers Google has working on driver-less cars are better than the developers working on Blogger. If so Google should use the software developers that know how to fix many serious defects to fix all the bugs in Blogger.
Even if you are Google you still need to build high quality defect free products or consumers will not trust you. I think if the Ford engineers used Blogger for three months heavily they would not make any business agreement with Google.

Why People Hate Social Media Promotions and Advertising

There are solid fundamental reasons why PPC and SEO will always be superior and more valuable then all of Social Media's combined promotion and advertising claims.
First of all the concept of people "searching" for exactly what they want and seeing it in less than a second is unbeatable.

The following article does a great job of verifying and explaining the rest of my beliefs. Of course I like the fact that this other expert agrees with me.
People do not want business advertisements forced upon them on Facebook or Twitter.

How to Optimize Your Google Adword (PPC) Investment

This is an interesting topic that is on many business owners minds. The following article is outstanding, yet too technical for many readers.
So I will give a few simple basic concepts before you read the article from SearchEngineLand.
The fundamental idea of a business is to maximize profits.
There is a saying I like and the author of this PPC article uses it:

"Revenue is vanity, and profit is sanity."

So your PPC bids can be very high and you will generate more revenue, however you will lose money.
I see this all the time with clients and even for my own products. E.g. if you have a low cost product you can spend a lot on advertising, then you will need to raise the price to cover these additional advertising expenses. I prefer to call them advertising investments in growing your business.
Also do not take PPC advice from Google Adwords employees. Think about it, their goal is to maximize Google's profits not yours.
People waste a lot of Google Adwords money by being #1 when it is better to be #3 as close to as possible to the natural/organic #1 ranking. Humans focus their vision on the #1 natural ranking spot and 85% of them skip the paid advertisements.

Google's Use of Artificial Intelligence and the Announcement of RankBrain

This was first posted on GotoTom2 on 10-26-15
It is a very big deal (breakthrough) in regards to improving search quality for Google. I do not believe Bing has any algorithms like this.

Google has released the details to the general public about it's new artificial intelligence system called RankBrain, which the search giant is using to handle difficult queries that search engines have previously been unable to solve.

The new RankBrain system is being used on a "very large fraction" of the search queries handled by Google, according to an unnamed Google employee. RankBrain helps Google decipher the approximately 16% of phrases that the search engine has not encountered before. According to Jack Clark who spoke with Google research scientist Greg Corrado. He said it is the third most important ranking signal.

Google Video - Older Yet Still Relevant Today: Google's 300 Year Mission

Google is on a 300 year mission, and we are only a few years into this long journey. It seems to me that the Google founders still have a passion to work as much as possible on achieving their 300 year objectives and goals as soon as they can. I think the next 10 years will be truly amazing and I will look back at this blog post and smile.
One interesting fact that is confirmed in this video is how the founders of Google resisted the idea of running advertisements on the Google search engine. Google's current revenue (Alphabet Inc.) is 99% from Internet advertising, furthermore Google transformed the entire advertising industry, and the future looks fantastic for Internet search.

Learn About Baidu's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Silicon Valley

Baidu is by far the most successful search engine in China. Less than 1% of Chinese people speak English, so it makes sense that a "Chinese" language based company dominates search in China. This coupled with the fact that Google does not want the Communist Chinese government censoring Google. I think "freedom of speech" is of paramount importance for all people of the world. I would like to learn more about the censoring Baidu does to keep the Communists happy. Also I wonder if Baidu will use it's artificial intelligence laboratory to do research that would help the Chinese government perform even more censoring of content?

A large percentage of Baidu's Artificial Intelligence (AI) research is conducted in Silicon Valley and not in Beijing China.

Attorney Says Judicial Arbitration Injures Victims and Consumers -- See New York Times Article

by Charlies Carreon

This article is in reference to the following New York Times article.
http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/11/02/business/dealbook/in-arbitration-a-privatization-of-the-justice-system.html?referer=&_r=0

This front page New York Times article about how arbitration provisions in many non-negotiable contracts slam the courthouse doors against the claims of severely injured people. As a young, ambitious proto-trial attorney just out UCLA back in 1986, arbitration provisions were not too often a concern in most of the contracts I dealt with. Today, it is one of the first issues I address when I deal with a dispute that involves a written contract. When I am reviewing a case for an injured/damaged client, if find an arbitration clause, it usually means game-over, because there is not going to be much available for the attorney if the case has to go to arbitration. Definitely don't plan on getting it in the arbitrator's award if it is a case involving workplace discrimination, physician malpractice, securities fraud, or negligent physical injury.
Why?
Because arbitrators are often conservative retired judges whose judicial habits have disposed them kindly to corporate defendants, and ungenerously toward those injured by corporate misconduct. They are quick to forgive executives for "mistakes," and slow to see transparent fraud, blatant prejudice, and obvious negligence. The National Arbitration Forum was put out of the business of arbitrating credit card debt cases because it turned out the whole damn NAF was run by Mann Bracken, one of the three largest collection law firms in the nation!
Although knocked out of doing credit card arbitrations, the NAF still arbitrates domain name disputes, with a 92% win rate for the corporate trademark holders last year, up from 88%. See the NAF news page for that admission. The total kiss of death for most cases is the fact that it costs a butt-load to arbitrate.

Laszlo Bock, Google's SVP of People Operations Discusses His New Book With Charlie Rose

This is a very interesting interview and this SVP of Google seems very intelligent and well qualified for his job. However sometimes at Google there seems to be a big disconnect of the morals and principles of the founders and the real 60,000+ Google employees I have to deal with.
While I like and agree with many of Mr. Bock's human resource management ideas, I respectfully disagree with some of Laszlo Bock's theories and beliefs, and in fact they are the cause of inappropriate and evil behavior at Google in my opinion.

If you have ever managed more than 50 employees you learn to decide which employees to trust more than others and you learn that instead of this bullshit and weak management theory that there is an absolute of "people are good" or "people are bad" is wrong. The truth is some people are mostly good, some people are bad and some people are good and bad.
Also this "taking away" of power of managers so they are primary just helpers is also totally incorrect. What about the motivation of the managers when you take their authority away?
Do they feel like they are working in a socialist environment where they cannot control their destiny?

The answer is to hire better managers and give them back the power Google has taken away. I would love to hear Jack Welch critic this book, I think he would tear it to pieces and agree with me. I found some of Jack Welch's comments on the Internet:
"It is not a communistic event," Jack said referring to business. Everyone laughed. He said that business is a game. The team with the best players win. The main job of the executive is to find the right team and the right players. Teamplay is about assembling a strong team.

I was also thinking that the main premise "taking away a manager's power to legally discriminate when hiring" harms any business if they hire "super star" managers. When I say "legally discriminate" I mean deciding issues like:

  1. Will I enjoy and be happy working with this person?
  2. Will other team members like working with this person?
  3. Do I think this candidate has good morals?
  4. Do I think this person is intelligent?
  5. Do I think this candidate is a fair and just person?
  6. etc., etc.

E.g. this is tied to an old 80/20 rule; 80% of the time a group will make a better decision than any one single individual. However if you have genius managers (Bill Gates) they will generally outperform the "large team" with their superior intellect and decision making. Often the super smart ones convince the masses so it becomes a group decision.

Free Blog Development Tools

I was looking online and found this list of the top 10 free blog development tools.

1. Delete WordPress off your List.
Way too many Hacker Problems - This is my first hand experience, not something I read on the Internet.

2.  Blogger.com - I give it a strong yes.
Google's Blogger is my top recommendation, they have some technical defects with their newest release which they are working on fixing. Blogger has proven to me they are the #1 product in the world and that Google is truly a world class company. I think the developers of Blogger should feel very proud that they built such a fantastic software product. However for the next release they should do a lot more testing prior to releasing the new Blogger software.
Blogger is a blog-publishing service that allows multi-user blogs with time-stamped entries. It was developed by Pyra Labs, which was bought by Google in 2003. Generally, the blogs are hosted by Google at a subdomain of blogspot.com.

3. Frankly I only know a little about the other blog development tools, as I am happily married to Google's Blogger. They did just make an important defect fix for me, so I stay with vendors as long as they keep trying to do their best.
I think having the "Search This Blog" feature by Google is a huge plus. I really would not trust anyone with a "search box" over Google.

New Regulations Coming for Drones

This is One of the Best Customer Testimonials I Have Ever Seen

I remember this company Conductor from years ago when they were blatantly selling text links and rubbing it publicly into Google's face.
Then they changed their entire business model and dropped selling text links that pass PageRank.
Now I am not sure what they are doing. I am posting this video for several reasons. First the video is fantastic and a great example for any company to study and learn from.
Second, SEO companies like mine never make client testimonial videos like this because we would not want to expose any of our clients to all the scrutiny this video would bring from Google. So I would be against any of my companies clients making a video like this.
By the way we (HTPcompany.com) provide equal or better SEO results and we have had the same clients for over 12 years.

I Am Testing OutBrain for Blog Advertising

I found this company named OutBrain.com that I am testing out.

So far I am not very impressed. Their website and marketing is fantastic, the real system has problems.

1. At first OutBrain approved my content, then later they deleted some of my content I submitted to them without any contact. As readers of my blogs know I am against these "Big Brother" methods. In an attempt at fairness to OutBrain, the content they kept was the best content and it may in fact be a "good decision" in order to help me. However I still have an issue of how it was done to me, e.g. to me the OutBrain process is too "Big Brother", this is also true for Google, Bing, and Yahoo, etc.

2. Their prices are very high, $0.52 to $1.80 per click.

3. Even with the high prices I am not receiving any traffic.

4. They sent me an email about OutBrain Boot-Camp, I do not want their boot-camp, I want real human service.

5. Google has nothing to worry about from these guys.

Privacy Censorship "Freedom of Speech" Many People Face These Issues

I have been thinking a lot about privacy, censorship, and freedom of speech, etc. lately.
I started researching this topic and found a very interesting article below. Just click on the graphic and it will take you straight to the real article. This gentleman is faced with some of the same issues and thoughts I am dealing with.
This is why I want comments, and I will post comments if people email me directly.
So yes I am censoring comments and when you read this persons blog experience below you will understand why this is sometimes necessary.

I did like and also agree with Steve's comment in his article.
Anyway, I’m not going to make a habit of doing this.  Censorship, for me, is a chickenshit way to limit the exchange of knowledge.  It’s not up to me to filter the thoughts of others, especially thoughts created by something I write.

Google May Have Caught and Penalized Another SEO Black Hat Network

I do not read or follow the SEO Black Hat forums often or other Black Hat information sources, because I am a White Hat SEO. However I do find it interesting to read and see all the evil clever stuff these Black Hat SEO's come up with when I check their forums every 2-3 months. Also so I can understand their Black Hat methods in case they attack my clients, so I can protect my clients. Unfortunately I have super star experts that work for me doing this, and our work load keeps growing.

I have a message to "Black Hat" SEO's besides kiss my ass. Why do you do this evil stuff? You just bring in crappy low quality traffic. It is better to have one super high quality website viewer (e.g. Larry Page) vs. 2,000,000 low quality viewers that bring you zero business.
My message and advice to business owners is always go for better quality and be safe so Google does not penalize you. If you hire a Black Hat SEO company you are still responsible. Google will not accept, "I did not know what they were doing."

What to do About All the Blogger Defects?

Update: 10-15-15
I am starting to like Blogger again.
It looks to me like Blogger did listen to me and fixed the problems I mention below.

This is huge, as now if you are capable of editing in HTML, you can fix all the text formatting defects in the Blogger "Compose" mode in "HTML" mode and when you open that post again in "compose" or "html" mode the fixes you made have been saved (inherited). Please see screen shot below.

Is Matt Cutts Ever Going to Come Back To Google?

I have been wondering about Matt Cutts and what he is doing these days.
The Internet is a very strange place sometimes and the notion that I know someone that I never even met is even more odd to me.

However I in fact know a lot about Matt Cutts, because I go back to the beginning of Google and I was even around before Matt Cutts. I like to call myself "the old man of the Internet" sometimes when I have all the 25 year old people working for me all over the world.

I used to email with Matt Cutts a lot in the early days and I still enjoy reading some of his old emails to me. Unfortunately things changed to a negative "no communication" Google style in the recent years.
Now that I know Google senior management reads my blog, I can not help giving Google some good ideas on this topic.
Google is the most successful company ever, since business began. Please read that line a few times, so it can be difficult to tell that successful of a company that they could be ten times bigger and more profitable. However since I have made a lot of money on Google stock over the last ten years as a shareholder I want to give the most valuable ideas I have to Google.

Google please hire a senior outside Internet/Software/SEO/SEM CEO to become the liaison E.g. Vice President of SEO Relations, or some important title with VP in it. This way Google could vastly improve their current  terrible relations with SEO companies, etc. All SEO companies I know still help their clients spend a ton of money on Adwords. My company has several clients that spend over $1,000,000 per month on Google Adwords. Who helps them spend all that money with Google? Me.
I can think of two people that would be perfect for this job. One is Rand Fishkin and the other is Tom Forrest.
Matt Cutts did the best he could, yet he is not really the best fit. Matt you are fantastic, however you never worked outside of Google and you are still much more of an "engineering" type personality. This VP job I am describing is a person that has very strong entrepreneurial skills and has actually worked in our industry outside of Google. The job would require world class marketing, technology and engineering skills. People that are multi-talented like this are very difficult to find.

Please do not misunderstand me, Matt and I were not friends and we had some very tough email battles, yet I respected him and thought he was highly intelligent and he was "always trying to do the right thing" for all parties. He is a person that tries his best to be fair and I admire that quality in people. Even though their were a few times I think he made a bad decision, I think 85% of the time I would agree with Matt Cutts on his decisions.

Yes Matt Cutts did some very nice things for me. I remember once I was in Perth Australia and we had a very serious hacker attack and Google (Matt Cutts) helped to save me.
I will never forget that. Thank you Matt.

He also took some penalties off some of my clients that deserved to be penalized. E.g. these were clients that came to my company already penalized by a prior SEO company.

Anyway Matt, good luck whatever you decide to do.
